The perfect opportunity comes up — the hot new project needs a team member with your specific knowledge and skill set – only problem is it’s in a different city. Career wise it’s a great fit. Life wise it means disruption. This is a common dilemma that most of us will face during our career.

Why go for it?

Here are a few reasons off the top of my head

1. Work isn’t just work. Despite our grumblings on the odd Monday, we spend 40+ hours per week on these things because we enjoy it. Most of us even spent considerable amounts of time cramming for exams and writing essays just for the privilege of being considered for these jobs. New projects, new co-workers, and new opportunities help keep things fresh.

2. Get out of your comfort zone. Yeah we all like the way our local barista makes the extra hot double non fat latte upon seeing our face in the morning. Remember that feeling the first time he/she knew your order? That’s the money melon. Maybe you can start a new fav drink!

3. It’s a small World. Nobody leaves behind anyone today. Facebook/blogs/email/skype/etc makes keeping in touch with people across the world easier than across the street. Besides, a quick trip to the airport will get you anywhere you need to be for the weekend. What’s better than a short reunion with old friends? Makes the stories better.

I could go on and on…and on…with reasons why relocating to a new city for work is worthwhile. Prefer to hear your reasons though.
